Thesis

Who are we?

Thesis, a digital agency in Portland, OR. We're hell-bent on humanizing the relationship between people and brands, which starts with our teams: real people making real work.

Come as you are. Bring what you bring. We’ll all be better for it.

The name is new-ish to us, but we've been around for 17 years. In contrast to our former identity that reflected what we do, we chose the name Thesis as it better represents how we do it: a full-service agency that believes our strength is in our approach—that the work we make is only as strong as the thought—and data—we put behind it.

That sounds intense.

But make no mistake, we also play real hard. All while respecting work-life boundaries.

The Job

As one of our team's Copy Editors, you'll defend our written work from inconsistencies and errors while preserving its spark and soul. You're detail-oriented for sure, and your analytical skills are off the charts—but you're a personable communicator first and foremost. Unicorns are encouraged to apply. And if comma splices feel like a kick in the heart, we need to meet.

Our agency's integrated teams collaborate equally and share accountability, in success and failure alike. That is to say, you should care intensely about your work without conflating work ego with personal ego.

As a person, you are

  • Irrefutably skilled in English grammar, punctuation, structure, etc.
  • Enthralled by language, clarity, problem-solving, objectivity, and curiosity
  • A collaborative written communicator with a high degree of skepticism
  • Skilled at switching rapidly between different style guides, audiences, and voices
  • Highly media-literate and a sharp, savvy, fast researcher
  • Good at receiving and giving critical feedback in a constructive, open, active, empathetic way
  • Able to understand the difference between style and error (or fact and opinion)
  • Allergic to jargon
  • Calm
  • Accurate

As a worker, you will

  • Nail deadlines
  • Edit and proofread written copy for technical and factual accuracy, consistency, clarity, brevity, and tone
  • Quickly tackle short- and long-form copy, from internal projects to brand-facing external work
  • Work with a peer Copy Editor to collectively advance the discipline and its processes
  • Collaborate with low ego
  • Help us hone our overall QA processes
  • Ask questions and share knowledge

As for experience, you need

  • A writing portfolio demonstrating both your editing and written work, including your editorial process, for real-world clients
  • 3+ years of professional proofreading/editing experience (or comparable experience)
  • BA in English, journalism, communications, or a related field of study (or comparable experience)
  • Working knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style
  • Comfortability with QA, comp reviews, design, and development processes
  • Attention to message, detail, quality, organization, and time management in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with Google suite and Asana project management software

Above all, be hungry to learn and grow beyond this job description.

Still with us?

Cool! Let's talk.

Workplace equity is not a single checkbox.

It's a crucial way of thinking, of working, and of moving through the world. At Thesis, we prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion. You'll see this in our hiring practices, growth plans, and workplace programs—because our agency, our work, and our society are better when diverse perspectives come together.
